That’s the way it has always been done. That’s the way so and so does it. In product management more than most professions, it is important to know why you are doing something. Knowing the “why” is your job. So often engineering gets caught up in the “how” and all the options, the “why” can get lost.

I remember one time I wanted a feature in a particular product and simply told engineering “what” I wanted and didn’t say why. It didn’t take long and they had engineered a great solution but didn’t solve the customer problem.

Always share with the team the “why” and not only the “what”, so many times we have found much easier ways of doing things
